This session highlights our school’s commitment to supporting multilingualism as a fundamental part of increasing intercultural understanding and international-mindedness. Students in an English B class explored the concepts of culture, language and identity through various texts, such as Sujata Bhatt’s poem Search for My Tongue and excerpts from David Crystal’s English as a Global Language (1997). They followed up with ideas as to how to promote their L1 around the school. These include writing and presenting poetry in mother tongue at the Poetry Cafe evening, presenting in L1 at the Peace Day assembly, and most recently taking part in the MUN multilingual school-wide activities and auditioning in their mother tongue for the inaugural TEDxYouth school event. A student speech about What if English was the only language, along with video clips of ideas from other students will be shared.   This session will show how our school has planned activities such as MUN sections in both Korean and Russian languages, and the opportunities these gave to our language learners.
Participants will gain an insight into the student voices: their first-hand ideas and experiences relating to multilingual learning in an international IB school.
